Situated in the heart of the Gran Bosco de Salbertrand Nature Park (also known as the "Parco delle Alpi Cozie"), just a short distance from Sauze d'Oulx, in the upper Susa Valley (Turin Province), Refuge Arlaud makes an ideal base - whether you’re arriving or leaving - for exploring this picturesque area. Welcome to our little hamlet in the mountains, where you can soak up the sun all year round! Originally built 30 years ago for the park rangers to use, over time, the chalet has been transformed, with more beds added (now offering accommodation for up to 16 people, divided among dormitories and family rooms), offering greater comfort, and earning prestigious European and regional awards, including the EU "Ecolabel", "Yes Quality" and "Italian Hospitality" labels. Since 2002, Elisa Pecar and her family have been affectionately managing the refuge.
Located in the middle of "Parco del Gran Bosco", with a panoramic view of La Meije and its 4,000 metre-high peaks, overlooking Petit Vallon and sat below the summit of L'Assietta, the refuge is a great stop-off point for the Via Alpina, the GTA (Grande Traversée des Alpes), Le Glorieux Rapatriement des Vaudoix, and the Tour du Thabor.
No matter the season, the park offers a unique opportunity to discover wildlife, witness the changing colours of the landscape, and savour the beauty and magic that lies far beyond a simple day trip to the mountains and back. Access
By rail:
Take the Turin-Bardonecchia line: Get off at the Salbertrand station. Follow the GTA signs for "rifugio Arlaud" (2 hrs, +700 m).
By road:
Coming from the Fréjus Tunnel or the Montgenèvre pass, follow the signs for Sauze d'Oulx. At the end of the main road, turn left towards Monfol (3 km).
You can reach the park and Refuge Arlaud from here (1hr 15 mins, +110 m). The walk is easy and even accessible for pushchairs.
From Col du Mont Cenis or Turin, you can reach Sauze d'Oulx by following the SS 24 (main road) or the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway. From Sauze d'Oulx, 100 metres after the tourist office, turn left to go to Monfol (3 km).
In summer, you can park in the Serre Blanche car park (which is not manned and is sometimes subject to a charge), located 600 metres after Monfol. In winter the road is cleared of snow as far as Monfol.
From the Serre Blanche/Monfol car park, follow the forest track (closed to cars) towards Montagne Seu. From here, it is an easy route accessible to pushchairs (1hr 15 mins, +110 m).
