From Névache (Ville Haute), cross the Clarée at Pont de l'Outre, walk 200 metres up the valley and veer left to reach Vallon de Cristol after a steep climb through the forest. When you reach the little valley, bear right onto the Côte Rouge path to enjoy the scenic overlook and continue along this route for about an hour. At the Buffère chalets cross over the small footbridge and you'll reach the refuge within 10 minutes.
In early summer you'll pass rhododendrons in bloom, and as you reach the end of the season, you can enjoy blueberries!
