Climbing Gros Peyron (3,047 m)

The Refuge Scarfiotti highlight!
A magnificent peak with a dolomitic appearance.
The Gros Peyron is a magnificent peak with a dolomitic aspect, characterised by a slope with imposing limestone rock faces and a detrital slope where the ascent route winds its way up. Leading up to Col d'Etiache, the path crosses vast meadows and plateaux before entering sheltered areas and shallow scree slopes of limestone rock. The porous nature of this terrain means that the area has little surface water which creates a truly impressive, almost lunar landscape.
Just down from the small lake facing the refuge, head up along the "sentier géologique" (geological path). After Granges d'Etiache (2,488 m), the path is not clearly visible. Pass the ruins on the left and continue towards the slopes where the path can be found again. When you reach Col d'Étiache, keep to the left (the right as you go up) and follow a series of rocks along the small pass. Cross a small rocky escarpment, then follow the route marked by the cairns.
You can then either climb up the Italian side through a small couloir and continue towards the summit or, by veering to the left, climb straight up the scree until you reach the other path at the summit. Your efforts are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the Ambin range, Ecrins, Rognosa d'Etiache and the less well-known peak, Pierre Menue.
