Mountain biking to Buffère

From Refuge Buffère
Of all the valleys on the right bank of the Clarée, this is the most suitable for mountain biking.

Vallon de Buffère is downhill from the pass, and can be explored entirely by bike from the south side via a rocky, rather tricky track from St Joseph, along the route to Col du Granon. It is also possible to complete the ascent towards Névache (a third pushing, and two-thirds cycling, on sometimes steep and craggy sections).

The upper section is technical if you follow the track, but there are some really pleasant sections on a good single-track route just above the refuge. To reach the Clarée, the Souchère trail is good at the top and bottom, with two very demanding and technical sections in the middle (with steps and rocks). The Rately trail is steep in places and very stony. From Rately, don't miss the path on the right bank of the Clarée that takes you directly to Névache (this route was resurfaced in the summer 2005 and is a fine, challenging route that can be covered entirely by bike).
