At an altitude of 1,780 m, Refuge Terzo Alpini has been privately owned since 2006, having previously belonged to the Italian Alpine Club. It is located in the Vallée Etroite (commune of Névache), a listed and protected area. The refuge was named after the 3rd Alpine Regiment of the Italian army, which fought in the region during the Second World War. Although it can be reached on foot from Névache, Modane and Bardonecchia in summer, and by car in summer via Col de l'Echelle, or ladder, one used to cross the pass here before the road was opened, in winter you can only get there on cross-country skis, off-piste touring skis or snowshoes. Managed by Riccardo and Anna Novo, Refuge Terzo Alpini can accommodate up to 34 guests. The refuge has hot showers in both summer and winter. Terzo Alpini is all about Italian tradition! The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and Riccardo's "Polenta Salsiccia" has put more than one exhausted hiker back on their feet!

Summer: France-Névache-Col de l'Echelle-Vallè Etroite
Italy-Bardonecchia-Melezet-Pian del Colle-Vallè Etroite
Getting there by train:
Briançon station is linked to the TER regional express trains from Marseille and Gap and to mainline trains from Paris and Lyon.
Bardonecchia-Oulx station has TGV services from Paris and Turin/Milan.
Winter:
Italy-Bardonecchia-Pian del Colle and then about 1hr 30 mins on foot, cross-country skis, off-piste touring skis or snowshoes.
France-Névache via Col des Thures, Col du Vallon, Col des Muandes, Col de la Vallée Etroite on snowshoes or touring skis.
